Central Plains beaded tipi bag, Ca. last quarter 19th century

A tipi bag from the central plains, most likely Arapaho, dating from about 1875 - 1880. Made of buffalo hide and embroidered in stripes of white-heart red and powder blue seed beads, with designs in green, navy blue and “mustard” beads. Adorned with tin cones and dyed yellow horse hair. This bag measures 18 × 11 × 3 inches.

Tipi bags, also called possible bags, were typically made in pairs and served as storage for clothing and other articles, doubling as tipi furnishings when in camp. This is a beautiful example, finely crafted by an experienced beadworker and in excellent condition.
